Books in My Life
Growing up, I wasn't the kid you'd find under the covers with a flashlight and a book, (that was my sister), but I liked to read. I remember my favorite books from childhood, early on The Sleepy Puppy, Hop on Pop, The Lonely Doll and later on The Little Princess, The Secret Garden and my absolute favorite, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
As a freshman in high school reading Siddhartha I recall my first experience of delving into a book and finding deeper meanings and realizing how much I enjoyed it. As I got older I realized how much I really enjoyed reading and the contemplation of the ideas and the deeper meanings exposed upon closer examination. That led me to the idea of joining a book club.
I was somewhat insecure and hesitant about joining a group of people I didn't know, not knowing if I'd fit in. After many years of thinking about it, but not doing anything about it (my typical mode of operation at the time) I found a book club starting for "open-minded progressive women ages 45 and up" in my area. I thought this is something I think I can do.
So in 2009, I joined my first book club, Booklovers Never Go To Bed Alone, and found my passion. After several months in the group, our organizer had to step down and I took on the task. After about a year and a half, we had a nice group of 18 ladies. We were happy with the size, but we had others who wanted join and that is when I started Booklovers Never Go To Bed Alone, Again. Now another two years later, I am about to do it again with a third book club,Booklovers Never Go To Bed Alone, Ever.
Being in a book club has brought a wealth of friends into my life. Finding people with whom I can share my thoughts and interests through the common bond of a book is so comfortable. My hope is to share that bond with others.
In the future I hope to bring you ideas for book club meetings, tips for running a book club and many more things that can help you enjoy the pleasure of reading and sharing with others.
Happy Reading!
