What I've Been Reading
Barren Cove by Ariel S. Winter is pitched as “a retelling of Wuthering Heights with robots”. I’ve never read Wuthering Heights (seen the movie though) and I’m not a big fan of robots, that being said, I still enjoyed Barren Cove. I read this knowing nothing about the story, but afterwards hearing that it was a retelling of Wuthering Heights I looked back and from what I do know of Bronte’s tale I could see the connection.
In Barren Cove we’re introduced to a world where humans are an endangered species and robots make up the majority of the population. I had a hard time getting into the narrative until the one human character was introduced and then it picked up for me. Winter does a good job of portraying the characters with distinct voices and personalities while not letting you forget they were robots. It’s well written and plotted and addresses the themes of family, identity, and what makes us human.
For me this was a fresh and original tale that I liked and would recommend, especially to someone who has read Wuthering Heights and likes robots, I believe they would love it!
